The Circle / The Table
The Table
Within the July Society there are many tables. The Circle is one: the inner table, set for fewer, and set differently.
Where the Society gathers broadly, the Circle gathers close. Its Salons are closed-door and never announced. Its seat at a Gala is the principal's table. Its introductions are made only within the room, and only by those already in it.
What is discussed at the table is not for the record. What is offered at the table is not listed anywhere. The Circle does not publish its calendar, its members, or its number. This is not secrecy for its own sake. It is the condition that makes candour possible.
Those seated at the table are drawn from the Society itself: people who have already shown, over time, the standard the table keeps. No one arrives at the inner table directly. Every member of the Circle was first a member of the Society.
